“It’s unfortunate what they’re doing,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said of Fox News’ primetime programming and gun violence coverage during a briefing related to the Monterey Park mass shooting that left 11 people dead, according to ABC10. lives were killed. “There is xenophobia, there is racist priming. What they have done to perpetuate crime and violence in this country by making scapegoats and doing nothing about gun safety for decades…”
Newsom’s comments came before a shooting Monday in Half Moon Bay that left seven dead and another last night in Oakland that injured seven and left a teenager dead.
“We have work to do,” Newsom said. “I mean, there are entire networks that do nothing but sell fear. That’s all they do. They sell fear of immigration. They sell fear of crime. And yet they sell calm on climate change. Let’s look at ourselves and these outlets and the debt.”
Referring to the “disgraceful” comments he had just made, Newsom continued: “I know exactly what that means. This clip will play and [then] I have 22 new tracks trying to attack and silence me and this is a warning to any politician who doesn’t want to name their prime time cast. It’s a pity. It’s a shame what these people say every night.”
Deadline has reached out to Fox News for comment and will add a response when received.
Amid the pandemic last February, Newsom lashed out at what he called “major disinformation networks in America” for spreading misinformation about Covid. He didn’t stop there.
“I’m not just referring to Newsmax or the propaganda line at Fox News and all of their pundits who have stood up safe, are completely in the dark and continue to promote a ton of misinformation. Forgive me for being so wise and outspoken. People are literally losing their lives.”
Newsom spoke about the broader issue of gun control in an interview with CBS Evening News host and editor-in-chief Norah O’Donnell on Monday.
“There is nothing surprising about that. Everything about it is annoying,” he told O’Donnell. “The second amendment would be a suicide pact.”
Earlier last year, the governor signed a gun safety law that would allow victims of gun violence to sue gun manufacturers. It is modeled after the mechanism in a Texas law that allows its citizens to sue doctors who perform abortions and others who help women access the procedure. The California law was declared unconstitutional by a judge.
While Newsom said he had “no ideological opposition to anyone reasonably and responsibly owning firearms, doing background checks and being educated,” he called out conservative media and like-minded politicians for their lack of action in light of the killing .
“This is not the right time,” he said, mimicking a pro-gun talking point. “[After] Sandy Hook: “Not the Right Time.” Rinse, repeat. Do you remember Uvalde? Notice? Rinse, repeat. You don’t remember Borderline here [in Thousand Oaks]. 13 people [were killed]. That was a few years ago. Look at it. Rinse, repeat. They do absolutely nothing and we know it and we let them get away with it.”
The governor, who has long been a suspect, justified his fierce resistance as follows: “I have four children. I have to sleep at night.”
So he announced that he would continue to work for stronger protection.
“I am the future ex-governor. I know everyone has tried to do this before. The same group tried to call me back. The same armed groups. Try again. I don’t give a damn.”
