If you’ve opened Netflix in the past few weeks, you can’t miss this one The pale blue eye. Since its release on the platform on January 6, this crime thriller with a gothic atmosphere occupies the first place movie the most watched on the platform, and continues to remain among the first 5.
However, is it worth a look? We tell you everything!
The Pale Blue Eye, what is it?
A retired commissioner recruits a brilliant West Point cadet named Edgard Allan Poe to help him solve a series of gruesome murders at the United States Military Academy…
In the cast of this film directed by Scott Cooper, we find the very tall Cristiano Balewhich has some masterpieces in its filmography such as Batman And American psycho. He plays the role of a disillusioned commissioner.
Nice surprise: the film also brings together two other actors who are probably more than familiar to you since they are Harry Melling (Yes, yes, Dudley grew tall – and became extremely thin) as well as Timothy Shoulder, who you probably knew as Peter Pettigrew aka Wormtail. Two comedians straight fromHarry Potter !
A rather prestigious and original gallery of actors to make us want to watch right away Pale Bue’s eye.
But let’s take a look at the trailer for the film anyway…
Gothic at will
Notice to lovers ofgothic atmosphere located in the Victorian erastories of mysterious murdersOf occult sciences which we discover in a large dusty grimoiretables winter composed of crowsOf cemeteries and snowy woods : The pale blue eye it’s made for you.
Netflix has worked hard to give the film a directly inspired feel the morbid work of Edgar Allan Poe. Often the characters of this macabre tale appear through the Mist overnight or they are illuminated candlelight. We seem to smell like them this terrible coldchilling as the homicidal barbarians which are the key to the mystery. But, in certain very brief moments, it also emerges a warm atmospherelike certain characters who, despite their strangeness, arouse our sympathy and empathy. In this world of ice, we want, like them, to find the light…

A multi-layered thriller with an amazing scenario, played by great actors
It is in this immersive, beautiful and poetic environment that unfolds before our eyes a finely constructed mystery. The pale blue eye it’s a well written thriller. It must be attentive to the smallest detailsthat the latter is in the wordsThey Actions (Sometimes strange) characters or in messages to decrypt…

Aside from its plot full of twists and turns, the film scores the power of its interpreters. As usual, Chrisitian Bale delivers a performance at the top of his game and succeeds, as he has already done Prestige for example, to give us good difficulty understanding it. Beside him, Harry Melling is charming in the cadaveric skin of an Edgar Allan Poe with large attentive eyes and inhabited by his poetry. The relationship that develops between the two characters it’s enough thrillingand the film manages to do both fascinating but still very mysterious. Do they have things to hide?
Even though the film has many qualities, it remains a Netflix production. In other words, don’t expect to be surprised by the staging, which it boils down to 2h10 of absolutely boring and redundant counterattack shots. Inevitably, this prevents us from exploiting all the power of its interpreters and the beauty of its sets, from having a real point of view on this story, and it’s a shame. This is a film that we would have liked to see on the big screen and freed from all the production constraints imposed on Netflix productions!
