Exclusive: French actress Déborah Lukumuena broke out nationally and internationally for her performance in Cannes Caméra d’Or 2016 and Netflix acquisition deity.
The actress makes her English-language Sundance debut in the feature debut of award-winning British writer-director Adura Onashile.
Lukumuena stars alongside debutant Le’Shantey Bonsu as a woman traumatized by conflict trying to find safe haven for her 11-year-old daughter in Scotland.
The couple seek solace in their soft but isolated world, but as the daughter grows older, she wants to push her boundaries and force the mother to face her past.
New Europe Film Sales in Warsaw, which began selling the title late last year, released a poignant clip summarizing the mother and daughter’s relationship ahead of the film’s world premiere at Sundance’s World Dramatic Competition, which begins next week.
Glasgow-based theater actress and director Onashile (Expensive shit) wrote and directed the screenplay.
Glasgow-based Barry Crerar’s Rosie Crerar and Ciara Barry direct the production with support from the BFI, BBC Film and Screen Scotland.
The feature film was developed by BBC Film and was originally part of the iFeatures program supported by Creative England, BFI and BBC Film. BBC Film also previously co-financed Onashile’s award-winning short film Expensive shit.
