Greta Thunberg was arrested by police during a protest against the demolition of a coal town on Tuesday 17 January. She was seen being herded around by authorities in the new photos, which you can see here, via Reuters. The 20-year-old environmental activist was arrested with other protesters while in Luetzerat. Police told the paper they expected to release Greta and other protesters within hours.

Police officers in riot gear were seen grabbing her arms and guiding her during her arrest, and she was later seen sitting in the back seat of a police car, as other protesters also gathered. Police officers were clearing the activists from buildings and trees around the city while the demolition crew waited. She was sitting near the edge of a mine. “Greta Thunberg was part of a group of activists who ran on the edge. However, she was arrested and brought to us with this group outside the area of ​​immediate danger to establish her identity,” a police spokesman told Reuters.

Greta announced she would be joining village protesters in an Instagram post on Jan. 13. She shared a photo of herself holding a “Keep it down” sign, while she stood with other protesters. “Week 230 of the climate strike. We are currently in Lützerath, a German town threatened with demolition due to the expansion of a coal mine. The people have resisted and defended Lützerath for years. Protesters are calling on the government to stop coal mining and instead focus on renewable resources. Despite their arrest, a police spokesman said Greta and other activists would soon be released. “There is no reason to detain them for days. It could be hours or they will leave immediately,” they told Reuters.
