A lawyer for President Joe Biden said additional documents with secret markings were found at his Wilmington home after previously saying a single page was found in that room.
Richard Sauber, a White House lawyer, said in a statement Saturday that because he had a security clearance, he went to the Wilmington home Thursday night to secure a single document found a day earlier. “When I passed this on to the DOJ officials accompanying me, five additional pages of classification markings were discovered among the enclosed material, for a total of six pages. The DOJ officers who were with me immediately took possession of them.
Biden’s team previously acknowledged the discovery of classified documents in the residence’s garage.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Robert Hur as a special counsel Thursday to investigate how the documents were handled and whether any laws were broken.
The first set of documents was found at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, DC, where Biden had an office after serving as vice president. Garland said the inspector general of the National Archives notified a Justice Department prosecutor on Nov. 4 that he had been notified by the White House that the documents in the offices had been identified. Garland said he has hired Chicago U.S. Attorney John Lausch to conduct an initial review of the case.
Garland said Biden’s personal attorney informed Lausch on Dec. 20 that additional documents had been found in the garage of Biden’s home in Wilmington, DE.
Then on Thursday, Biden’s personal attorney called Lausch this morning to let him know that an additional classified document had been found at the Biden residence in a room off the garage.
Sauber said in its statement that after the single site was discovered on Wednesday, the lawyers conducting the search stopped searching the area because they did not have security clearances.
“The president’s attorneys acted promptly and voluntarily to make the Penn Biden documents on file and the Wilmington documents available to the DOJ,” Sauber said.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has already begun his own investigation into the White House and Justice Department handling the discovery of the classified material.
