The Gothenburg Film Festival has announced the competition titles selected for its 46th edition, which runs from 27 January to 5 February. (Scroll down for the full list).
Gothenburg is divided into four parts of the competition. The most important part is the Nordic competition with nine films from Scandinavia. The winner of the competition takes home the Dragon Award and a cash prize of SEK 400,000 ($38,000). The rest of the festival consists of the Nordic Documentary Film Competition, the Ingmar Bergman Competition for Emerging Filmmakers and the International Competition.
One of the Scandinavian highlights is the thriller by Swedish filmmaker Isabella Carbonell dog born, with Swedish rap star Silvana Imam. The picture premiered in Venice last year and follows two homeless twins and their struggle to survive. The well-received historical play by Hlynur Pálmason land of the gods also fencing in competition. Set in the late 19th century, the drama is about a young Danish priest who travels to a remote part of Iceland to build a church and photograph the people. The deeper he ventures into the unforgiving landscape, the more he strays from his purpose, mission and morals.
Other notable titles are those of Marie Kreutzer corsagekeep their man in international competition, and the latest from Mia Engberg hyper afternoon in the documentary film competition. Engberg is best known internationally for her popular 2013 documentary Belleville baby.
It was also announced today that Swedish filmmaker Jan Troell will receive this year’s Nordic Honorary Dragon Award. Troell is best known for his two major works in Swedish, The emigrants (1971) and its sequel, The new country (1972). The two films follow a farming family as they leave the barren Swedish countryside in the 19th century for America.
Troell will also perform at the festival on January 28 following a screening of his 2008 drama Eternal Moments. The festival screens a total of 250 films in cinemas around Gothenburg, with a selection of 50 titles available online in Sweden.
As already announced, Holy Spider The breakthrough Tsar Amir Ebrahimi will chair the Nordic Competition Jury. Ebrahimi will be joined on the jury by Danish actress Sofie Gråbøl (The murder), the Ukrainian filmmaker Antonio Lukich (Luxembourg, Luxembourg) and composer Matti Bye.
