Mired in scandals, the Golden Globes bet on inclusive measures (and stars) in 2023

Mired in numerous scandals, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, organizer of the Golden Globes, will try to restore the image of the Hollywood ceremony this Tuesday, January 10th. They claim to have put in place new, fairer and more inclusive measures.

Racism, sexism, corruption… These are the complaints addressed to one of the most important evenings in Hollywood, the Golden Globes.

This Tuesday, January 10, the ceremony will be back for an 80ᵉ edition during which the best American films and television series of 2022 will be awarded. An evening with a special status, at a time when the ceremony proves a difficult comeback after causing a scandal.

Racism, sexism and corruption

It was one of the most prestigious parties of the year, but multiple revelations definitely tarnished his reputation. The Golden Globes faced a deluge of controversy one more compromising than the other.

In 2021, the Los Angeles Times revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA extension), organizer of the ceremony, it had no black members. Many members of the association have also been accused accepting trips and other gifts from Hollywood studios in exchange for their active support.

The Golden Globes faced a wave of boycott by many personalities but also by NBC, the channel traditionally responsible for its television broadcast. In 2022 the ceremony had thus been deprived of television broadcasting. If the chain is partner of the evening again, it will have to prove itself, because their contract only lasts this year. Whether it will be renewed for subsequent ones remains to be seen.

New measures (and stars) for a return in 2023

For his return in 2023, the goal of the Golden Globes is to regain respectability multiplying by it the new measures. The HFPA then announced that they hosted 103 new voters among its members so that the jury understands “52% female and 51.5% racial and ethnic diversity”. Previously, the latter had only 80 members.

To regain credibility, the ceremony also relies on an array of stars. African-American gay comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the ceremony in the Beverly Hilton Hotel room, while Quentin Tarantino they will be among the celebrities presenting their awards to the nominees. Among the audience we will also find great names of American 7ᵉ art such as James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Ana de Armas, Anya Taylor-Joy or even Daniel Craig. Nominated for his interpretation of the soundtrack of Black Panther 2, Rihanna he would also try to free himself for the evening.

However, the Golden Globes did not convince everyone. It is not yet known if Tom Cruise will be present. A question that particularly raises questions since the star he had returned the three Golden Globes he received during his career in protest against the HFPA. Also, actor Brendan Fraser, star of The whale announced who was boycotting the ceremony. In 2018, in the midst of the #MeToo explosion, he had accused the former president of the association, Philip Berk, of sexually assaulting him in 2003.
