Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a Republican outcast as a member of the Jan. 6 committee, joins CNN as a senior political commentator.
Kinzinger served six terms in the US House of Representatives, representing an Illinois congressional district. In addition to the January 6 Committee, he served on the House Committees on Energy and Commerce and on Foreign Affairs.
He tweeted about the impasse when House Republicans failed to elect a new speaker, blocking work in the House. “The world can now see what we have been dealing with for years,” Kinzinger wrote, commenting on a comment by Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), who complained that the GOP interruptions “were just clowns for Kevin McCarthy as speaker.”
Kinzinger served in the Air Force in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in November 2003 and later received his pilot’s wings and served in Air Force Special Operations, Air Combat Command, Air Mobility Command and Air National Guard. Kinzinger is still a pilot in the Air National Guard, with the current rank of lieutenant colonel.
Kinzinger and another GOP member on the Jan. 6 committee, Liz Cheney, were reprimanded by the Republican National Committee as they pressed for answers about Donald Trump’s responsibility for the Capitol attack.
