Bump to Christmas: Los Angeles Covid numbers rising fast, with most at or above recent highs

Los Angeles County’s Covid numbers have risen across the board since Christmas, with cases, hospitalizations and deaths approaching or exceeding recent highs.

The provincial health ministry reported 3,968 new cases, as well as 1,269 additional virus-related hospitalizations and 25 other Covid-related deaths. The actual number of cases is believed to be much higher because many people now use home test kits, the results of which are not reported.

Thursday’s daily case count represents a jump of 1,830 from Wednesday, while hospitalizations increased by 74 on the day. The 25 virus-related deaths reported Thursday were four more than Wednesday’s total.

Perhaps the most alarming statistic is Thursday’s seven-day daily average of positive tests of 15.6%. That’s up from less than 10% two weeks ago, quite a jump for a number averaged over seven days to iron out errors in the data.

County Health Director Barbara Ferrer urged continued vigilance against the spread of the virus during holiday gatherings during a briefing Thursday.

“I want to wish everyone a happy new year and above all a safe and healthy new year,” she said.

Ferrer also reported: “In the past week it was 192 on average [hospital] Shots per day, which is a slight increase from 178 shots per day a week ago.”

She continued: “As of mid-November, reported deaths and hospitalizations accounted for about 50 percent of current figures and Covid hospitalizations are still well above the peak of the summer surge.”
