A new member of one of Major League Baseball’s most elite clubs. Detroit Tigers forward Miguel Cabrera joins the 3,000 hit/500 home run club today with his debut at Colorado Rock.
He’s the 33rd player in MLB history to score 3,000 hits, earning him almost a ticket into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Cabrera’s ground ball hit Venezuelan national Antonio Senzatella from the right of the court and sparked a celebration around the Parque de los Tigres de Comica. People cheered and called his name as the fireworks went off and his teammates rushed to spin him.
Later at the same inn, he was scored with three promising hosts by rookie Spencer Torkelson, who largely took over the first base duties when the former Cabrera moved to DH.
At the end of the kick, the “Congratulations to Migi” sign was lit as Cabrera got off the bench and pointed to the fans. The celebration differed significantly from Cabrera’s last bat on Thursday, when he deliberately walked over the New York Yankees and caused excitement among fans who wanted to see history made. Friday’s game against the Rockies was rainy and set the stage for Saturday’s drama.
Cabrera, 39, is the first Venezuelan-born player and the seventh Latino to reach 3,000.
His resume includes winning the Triple Crown in the home league, RBI and midfield, and winning his first MVP award in 2012.
He is the third player to take his 3,000th shot in Detroit, joining Tai Cobb and Al Kalin.
