Russian national Kristina Romanova has returned home to Russia in a severe health condition after being detained in Mexico for three years. Her adoptive mother Marina Romanova confirmed her return and state of health in comments reported by the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda.
The young woman reached the age of adulthood when she turned 18 on June 19, an event that legally ended her placement under Mexican state care. Rather than returning the teenager directly to her relatives upon her release from custody, municipal officials secured job placement and housing for her while concealing her location and records from her parents.
Following her return home, Romanova is now focusing on recovering her physical health, replacing her official personal documents, and adapting to family life once again. After initially speaking only in Spanish upon arriving from the shelter, she gradually regained the ability to communicate with her family in Russian.
Health concerns and medical treatment
According to her mother, Romanova suffered severe damage to her health during her period in state care. The 18-year-old complained to her family of feeling unwell as a result of taking prescribed psychotropic medications.
Her family reported that Romanova was prescribed six tablets per day. Under the influence of this medication regimen, her body temperature dropped to 35 degrees Celsius and her pulse became barely detectable. She is now in the process of gradually lowering the dosage under supervision while working with her family to investigate whether the prescribed treatment was medically justified.
