French television network TF1 launches its new season of Koh-Lanta All Stars in Panama on Tuesday evening, introducing a high-risk format where eighteen returning contestants compete in pairs from their very first day.
Under the unprecedented configuration marking the 25th anniversary of the adventure reality series on TF1, the returning adventurers will play under a linked fates mechanism starting in the premiere episode at 9:10 pm. The paired arrangement leaves each duo facing a one in nine chance of being eliminated during the initial tribal council.
The linked fates rule serves as a double-edged sword for all eighteen competitors. While partners share victories in physical challenges, they also share the threat of departure. If one contestant receives the majority of votes from fellow adventurers during the tribal council vote, their paired partner is automatically eliminated alongside them. Show producer Julien Magne promised that the season would prove intense right from the start.
Instead of dividing contestants into traditional tribal teams upon arrival in Panama, the production paired each adventurer with a contestant they originally shared a season with. For example, the 12th season set in Malaysia, which aired in 2012, is represented by Ugo and Camille. The 2020 4 Terres season brings together Dorian and Lola.
Koh-Lanta is a long-running French reality competition show broadcast on TF1 and based on the international Survivor format. Over 25 years on French television, the show places contestants in isolated environments where they must construct shelters, forage for food, and survive physically demanding trials while navigating complex social alliances to avoid elimination at tribal councils.
Alliances and Rivalries Among the Paired Duos
The interdependency of the linked fates system means that contestant dynamics will dictate survival. Certain pairings enter the competition with established trust. Freddy and Christina are participating together for the third time and benefit from knowing each other well. Similarly, Naoil and Moussa have maintained a strong bond since competing together in the 2020 season L'ile des heros.
Speaking at a press conference in early July, Moussa emphasized that it was important for him to find himself paired with someone he appreciated. He explained that during L'ile des heros he considered Naoil like a little sister, adding that they advanced together until the end of that adventure, had not let go of each other since, and still send messages to each other from time to time.
Other pairs enter the game under far more volatile conditions. Clementine and Yassin are known to bicker during every shared participation. Meanwhile, Maxime and Joana got along like cat and dog during La revanche des 4 terres one year ago.
Joana admitted that she fell from high up when she discovered her partner this year, describing herself as devastated. She explained that things between the two of them were quite complicated because Maxime is very resentful. However, she put the situation into perspective by stating she was also happy because she knew he would be a strong presence on the athletic side of the game.
Former Winners Face Increased Risk of Elimination
Advancing in Koh-Lanta requires candidates to maintain popularity without appearing overly threatening to rivals. The linked fates episode frequently provides a strategic pretext to eliminate major threats by voting for their partner under a secondary justification.
The most vulnerable contestants in an All Stars season are those who have previously won Koh-Lanta. Both revered and feared, former champions represent easy targets whom opponents can vote out with a clear conscience. Three former winners are competing this year: Christina, Ugo, and Naoil. Their respective partners, Freddy, Camille, and Moussa, must consequently exercise extreme caution to avoid collateral downfall.
The returning contestants do not start on equal footing regarding past relationships and experience. While some pairs, such as Tania and Nicolas, Laure and Vincent, or Dorian and Lola, have only one season to their credit, veteran competitors possess wider social networks built across multiple appearances.
Strategic Networks and Shifting Rules
Aside from her partner Yassin, Clementine previously shared a season with Ugo and Freddy in La legende in 2021. Freddy crossed paths with Moussa in La revanche des heros in 2012, while Ugo met Jacques in La tribu maudite in 2024. These interconnected pasts offer strategic networking opportunities for seasoned veterans.
Addressing the disparity in player networks, producer Julien Magne noted that it is inherent to an All Stars season that contestants from recent editions know fewer people than multi-season veterans. However, Magne asserted that the instant linked fates mechanism was specifically designed to shatter certitudes and potentially break up pre-existing affinities.
Magne also promised that the production would introduce new rules and surprises throughout the season. He emphasized that all duos and alliances are bound to explode eventually, noting that in the end, only one survivor will remain.
