Beauty queen Kiara Bowling suffered severe injuries after a seven-year-old boy and his younger brother stole their parents' car in Oakland.
The 31-year-old pageant winner was walking her dog near her home on the morning of August 6 when the children lost control of the vehicle, according to a report by People magazine. The seven-year-old boy had taken the keys to his parents' automobile without permission before setting off on a drive with his four-year-old brother.
After travelling several blocks at high speed, the vehicle clipped another car. The children's car then mounted the sidewalk and struck Bowling as she walked along the street.
Oakland is a major port city situated in Alameda County, California, directly across the bay from San Francisco. The city's residential neighborhoods feature pedestrian walkways where local residents regularly exercise and walk pets.
Severe Injuries and Ongoing Recovery
Both children sustained injuries during the crash. The seven-year-old driver suffered fractures to both of his legs, while his four-year-old brother suffered a concussion when the car came to a stop.
Bowling sustained far more critical injuries in the collision. She suffered a severe traumatic brain injury accompanied by memory loss, as well as fractures to her ribs and facial bones.
Medical staff reported that Bowling is currently relearning how to walk, swallow, and speak. Her consciousness has not yet fully returned to normal following the incident, and doctors stated that her complete recovery could take years to achieve.

She retains only vague memories of the final weeks leading up to the crash. At times during her hospital recovery, she has told people that children stole her car.
Traumatic brain injuries occur when physical impact damages brain tissue, disrupting memory, speech, and motor functions. Long-term medical recovery typically involves physical therapy to restore movement, speech-language therapy for swallowing difficulties, and cognitive rehabilitation.
Background and Professional Achievements
Earlier in 2026, Bowling won the regional beauty title of Miss California Regency International. The pageant operates as an independent brand that evaluates contestants on personal and professional achievements alongside traditional appearance and talent presentations.
Before the incident, Bowling worked with the charitable organisation Lady Echelon Project, Inc. She was also enrolled as a university student pursuing a legal education.
Regional pageants within the Regency International system serve as platforms that emphasize civic engagement, career goals, and community involvement. Studying law at a university involves coursework designed to prepare students for professional careers in legal practice and public service.
Police Investigation Status
Oakland Police Department officers have not yet completed their formal investigation into the crash. Law enforcement authorities have not filed charges against the parents of the two young boys.
Traffic collision investigations by municipal police departments focus on physical evidence collection, speed analysis, and vehicle control. Under California legal frameworks, statutory standards govern parental supervision responsibilities when young children access motor vehicles without authorization.
