Karpetopoulos Recalls How He Met Singer Mazonakis

Greek sports journalist Antonis Karpetopoulos revealed on Sunday afternoon how he first met singer Giorgos Mazonakis, saying the two crossed paths when Karpetopoulos went to buy a house that belonged to the performer.

Speaking on the ERTnews show "Update," Karpetopoulos said Mazonakis, who died unexpectedly at the age of 54, had been selling a property in central Athens about 12 years ago. Karpetopoulos said he had shown interest in the property at the time without knowing who owned it.

A house with no clue whose it was

Karpetopoulos said the way he met Mazonakis was unusual. He said he had gone to buy one of the singer's houses many years earlier, around 2003 or 2004, without realising it belonged to Mazonakis, since he knew the singer lived in the southern suburbs of Athens while this property was in the city centre.

He said the house was the cleanest he had ever seen, adding that Mazonakis had a genuine obsession with cleanliness and that the house shone even though no one lived in it. Karpetopoulos said there were two large photographs of Mazonakis inside, one in the bedroom and one in the common area, which led him to assume he had walked into the home of a fan of the singer.

Mazonakis wanted to give him the house

Karpetopoulos said he did not end up buying the property. Some time later, he said, Mazonakis spotted him in the Athens suburb of Glyfada and asked why he had not bought the house, telling him he had wanted him to have it.

Karpetopoulos said he then asked Mazonakis whether the house had actually been his, to which the singer replied by asking how he could have seen a house with two photographs of him and assumed it belonged to someone else. Karpetopoulos said that was how the two became acquainted, and that they would occasionally meet and talk afterward, though not in recent times.
