A housing project for people displaced from Kalush will represent Ukraine at the 20th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2027, the Ukrainian Institute announced.
The project, called "KO-KHATY. A Sea of Questions," was created by the civic organization METALAB.
It draws on experience in Kalush, where more than 100 people settled in a renovated kindergarten. METALAB worked with residents there to explore the boundary between basic needs and the right to dream.
The Ukrainian Institute said the pavilion will immerse visitors in a dark pool featuring video installations by director Nadia Parfan about life in the Kalush community.
Pavilion leadership and dates
Tetiana Filevska has been named commissioner of the Ukrainian pavilion at the architecture biennale. Ahead of the opening of the 19th Biennale, the Ukrainian Institute signed a memorandum under which it will serve as pavilion commissioner through 2030.
The 20th Venice Architecture Biennale will run from May 8 to November 21, 2027, at the Arsenale and the Giardini. Its title is "Building the Architecture of Coexistence in the Face of Reality," a theme focused on coexistence amid global warming.
The European Union suspended funding for the Venice Biennale after Russia returned to participate in the exhibition.
