Sunderland have officially signed 18-year-old Ecuadorian striker Juan Riquelme Angulo Caicedo from Independiente del Valle on a long-term contract, the club announced on Tuesday.
The Premier League side confirmed the transfer on 1 September across their official media channels as the European transfer window drew to a close. Angulo leaves his homeland to begin his career in English football at the Stadium of Light.
In an official statement announcing the move, Sunderland expressed delight at securing the teenager's signature, noting that the young forward arrives directly from Independiente del Valle after agreeing a multi-year deal.
Sunderland, based in North East England, play in the top flight of English football at the 49,000-capacity Stadium of Light. The club has increasingly focused on securing high-potential young talent from overseas to strengthen their squad.
Breakthrough season in Ecuador
Angulo made his senior professional debut for Independiente del Valle earlier in 2026, making an immediate impact by scoring on his first appearance. On 7 March, the striker netted in a 3-1 victory against Mushuc Runa.
That debut set the tone for a productive opening season with the Ecuadorian outfit. Angulo went on to make 23 appearances for the first team across all competitions, scoring seven goals while featuring in domestic league matches and continental South American tournaments.
Independiente del Valle, based in Sangolqui, are renowned across South America for operating one of the continent's premier youth academies. The club, known locally as Los Rayados, has established a strong reputation for developing elite prospects who transition to top foreign leagues.
Youth international recognition
Before breaking into senior club football, Angulo established himself as a key performer for Ecuador at youth international level. He was called up to the national under-15 team for the South American U-15 Championship, where he played a pivotal role in his country's run to the final.
During the tournament, the forward scored group stage goals against both Uruguay and Brazil before finding the net again in a semi-final clash with Chile. Ecuador ultimately finished as runners-up, falling to Paraguay in a penalty shoot-out following a 0-0 draw in regulation time, while Angulo finished as the competition's top scorer.
Angulo continued his international progression with Ecuador's under-17 side at the 2025 South American U-17 Championship, where he scored in a 4-0 group victory over Uruguay.
His impressive youth performances earned him wider recognition at senior level. In March 2025, Angulo received his first call-up to the senior Ecuador national squad under then-manager Sebastian Beccacece, although he did not make an appearance.
Move to the Premier League
At just 18 years of age, Angulo now takes one of the most significant steps of his developing career. Sunderland completed the deal to bring the Ecuadorian prospect to England as the transfer window reached its deadline.
The young striker is now set to join up with his new team-mates as Sunderland continue their Premier League campaign.
