Actor John Malkovich has declared that he has no intention of retiring at 72, speaking to reporters on Thursday at the Venice Film Festival ahead of the premiere of his latest film.
The two-time Oscar nominee emphasized that his passion for acting remains undiminished as he prepares for the world premiere of the dark comedy Wild Horse Nine.
Addressing questions about his future in cinema, Malkovich stated that he intends to continue working and doing what he has loved throughout his life. He noted that he does not plan to step away from acting, adding that he expects others will retire him when the time comes, describing that outcome as the natural course of things.
Malkovich brings nearly five decades of experience to his latest role, having built a screen career that includes approximately 150 film and television appearances.
He previously earned two Academy Award nominations in the Best Supporting Actor category. His first nomination came for the 1984 drama Places in the Heart, followed by a second nomination for his role in the 1993 political thriller In the Line of Fire.
Oscar Buzz for Wild Horse Nine
Critics and observers already consider Malkovich an early favorite for another Oscar nomination for his starring role in Wild Horse Nine. The project was written and directed by Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh.
McDonagh is widely known for acclaimed films such as the 2008 crime comedy In Bruges, the 2017 drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and the 2022 dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin.
According to the official synopsis, Wild Horse Nine is set shortly before the 1973 military coup in Chile. The story follows CIA agents Chris, played by Malkovich, and Lee, played by Sam Rockwell, who are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their chief, MJ, played by Steve Buscemi.
While stationed among the island's iconic stone statues, the two veteran partners struggle with past events and ongoing conspiracies. Their mission faces derailment when Chris forms a bond with two revolutionary students, played by Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas.
Release Schedule
The black comedy is scheduled to open in limited theatrical release across the United States and the United Kingdom starting November 6.
