Today Show co-hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones are facing reported tension on set that could trigger a lineup change next season, according to insiders. Network executives are paying close attention as friction between the fourth-hour presenters begins spilling over onto live television broadcasts.
Viewers recently highlighted an awkward exchange following a performance by rock band Mumford & Sons on the morning program. Jones, 48, admitted that she did not really know about the rock band but is now a fan. Her co-host Hager, 44, then claimed that she knew them differently, prompting Jones to begin disclosing details from their meeting.
Jones told viewers that Hager decided to share with them, but Hager swiftly shut her down on air. Hager snapped, "No, I didn't. No, I know what you mean, and we're not saying that. Remember? I got a text that said, 'Don't say that.'" Jones replied with "Oops!" after realizing her faux pas. Viewers described the interaction as awkward and insufferable, noting that the presenters lacked chemistry on screen.
Set tension and off-camera distancing
The apparent onset tension between Hager and Jones has grown more noticeable in recent weeks as they co-host the Today Show's fourth hour. An insider told the Daily Mail that the pair started out as close friends but have slowly started distancing themselves, a shift that those on set have definitely noticed.
The insider revealed that off-camera interactions are worse than what viewers see on television. Both co-hosts have strong personalities, creating a sisterly bond marked by ups and downs where they sometimes need space. The source claimed the two presenters no longer spend time together outside of work hours.
Jones, a Philadelphia native who spent most of her childhood in Wichita, Kansas, made her debut as the permanent fourth-hour co-host on January 12. Hager welcomed her warmly at the time, stating she was so excited about this new iteration of the show and so happy to host alongside Jones. Hager added that getting to fall even more in love with Jones would be a beautiful chapter in the show, while Jones called landing the job beyond her wildest dreams.

Jones replaced Hoda Kotb, who departed the show in January 2025 as a permanent host following a rotation of celebrity stand-ins. Jones has a long history with NBC, having joined the Weekend Today team in 2014 before becoming a co-host on the third hour of Today in January 2019.
