Many homes across Spain lack air conditioning, yet the heat in most Spanish regions rivals that of southern Italy or Greece. Rather than relying on modern technology, Spaniards use a set of practical, effective techniques to keep their homes cool, according to femcafe.hu.
Block out the sun
The first line of defence is shutters or heavy curtains drawn completely during the day. The goal is not to darken the home but to stop the sun from heating walls and floors. Proper shading can reduce indoor temperatures by several degrees.
Ventilate at the right moment
Early in the morning, while the air is still cool, windows are opened throughout the home to let cold air circulate. Once the sun rises and temperatures begin to climb, the windows are closed, sealing the cooler air inside.
Wet towels and smarter fans
Spaniards also use light bedding and keep towels dampened with cold water on hand to cool the body or wrists. Fans are common, but rather than running them alone, households place a bowl of cold water or ice in front of the fan to chill the circulating air.
Adjust the daily routine
During the hottest part of the day, Spaniards cut back on movement and stay indoors. Physical activity is planned for the morning or evening when temperatures are lower, reducing strain on the body during peak heat.
