HOMCA PL06 Cervical Pillow Adjusts to Sleep Position

The HOMCA PL06 cervical pillow flips between an 8.5cm and a 14.5cm side to support side and back sleepers differently.

HOMCA PL06 Cervical Pillow Adjusts to Sleep Position

A new cervical pillow, the HOMCA PL06, is designed to close the gap that forms between the shoulder and the ear when someone sleeps on their side. According to Marina Ros, writing for La Razon, a flat pillow leaves that gap unsupported all night, forcing the neck to hold the position until morning. The HOMCA PL06 addresses this with two different heights built into a single piece of memory foam.

The height is chosen by flipping the pillow over before getting into bed. One side measures 8.5 centimetres and the other measures 14.5 centimetres. The taller side is meant for side sleeping, the position that leaves the greatest distance between the mattress and the ear. The lower side, which has a central cavity for the neck, is meant for sleeping on the back.

Two heights in one piece of foam

The difference shows up in the trapezius muscle more than anywhere else. When the pillow is not tall enough, the neck tilts downward all night and the muscle on the supporting side has to compensate without rest, so a person wakes up turning their head to loosen it. When the contour fits properly, the head and spine stay roughly in line, which is the most a pillow can be asked to do.

Even so, 14.5 centimetres is a significant height. Someone with a smaller build or narrower shoulders may find their head pushed upward instead, producing the same kind of misalignment as a flat pillow but in the opposite direction. For that case, the brand also sells a smaller version measuring 60 by 35 centimetres, with heights of 8 and 12 centimetres.

70 by 40 centimetres: room to turn over

The 40-centimetre depth is what sets this pillow apart from a standard cervical pillow. Most contoured pillows require sleeping centred and still, so anyone who shifts position several times a night ends up with half their head off the foam and the other half against a hard edge. The HOMCA PL06 leaves enough margin to change sides without leaving the contoured area, which in practice means not waking up to reposition.

Its weight helps with the same problem. At 1.8 kilograms, the pillow tends to stay where it is placed, rather than sliding against the headboard or bunching up when pressed with an arm underneath. That weight makes it impractical to pack for travel, though it is not intended as a travel pillow.

A removable, washable cover

The cover comes off and can be machine washed, which matters in the summer heat and for anyone who sweats at night, since memory foam retains warmth and moisture and a pillow that cannot be washed for a year tends to smell like it. The fabric carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, meaning it has been tested for harmful substances, a reasonable requirement for something a person's face rests against for a third of their life. It is also available in black and grey for anyone who would rather not watch a white cover yellow over time.

The first few nights, Ros notes, can feel strange. A neck used to sleeping in a twisted position takes a few days to adjust to the new posture, and it is normal to wake up somewhat stiff or foggy-headed during that period. Anyone reaching for a cervical pillow has usually already tried several others, so the advice is not to judge it after the second morning but after a full week of use.

Correcting night-time posture, the article says, is the one part of the day that can be fixed without changing jobs or chairs, and with an Amazon coupon it becomes more worthwhile to try.
