A 20-year-old man was hospitalized after a bizarre masturbation accident, the first of its kind.
The unnamed Swiss patient reported a rare lung injury, usually from heavy exercise or severe coughing.
One night in the intensive care unit, while staying in the hospital for three days, the doctors tried to relieve the pain caused by the trapped air.
The man went to the emergency room after experiencing sudden chest pain and shortness of breath while resting in bed.
When he arrived, his face was swollen and wheezing could be heard from his neck to his arms.
Doctors diagnosed him with “spontaneous” pneumomediastinum (PMS), in which air escapes from the lungs and becomes trapped in the rib cage.
Not sure how the injury happened, but they did notice that it was more common in younger men.
In his case, the trapped air spread throughout his body and even his skull. In more extreme cases, it can cause lung collapse.
Some cases have been reported during sex, but never during masturbation.

Doctors treating the patient at the cantonal hospital in Winterthur said his case was “unusual”.

The patient, who came to the hospital with “severe” shortness of breath, told doctors he started with severe pain in his chest while masturbating.
His medical history revealed that he had mild, untreated asthma and ADHD.
An X-ray showed a “deep” amount of air in his mediastinum, the space between the lung sacs in his chest, known as pneumomediastinum.
The escaping air had also traveled to other parts of his body, to the “base of his skull.”
Doctors noted that his face was swollen and crackles could be heard when fingers were pressed on his neck, chest and arms.
The patient refused to use drugs or smoke and did his case “spontaneously”, saying he did not cough or engage in strenuous physical activity.
He was transferred to the intensive care unit, where he was given oxygen, acetaminophen, and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
When his condition improved overnight, he was referred to a general practitioner and his chest pain continued for another three days.
He was discharged on the fourth day and his condition was considered “uncomplicated”.
The doctors write in the report: ‘Predisposing factors are smoking, acute asthma and a history of recreational drug use (particularly cocaine and heroin).
“No trigger was detected in our patient, except for a history of mild, non-acute asthma.
“There are only a few reports of PMS related to sexual activity, and we did not find any cases of autoeroticism, which makes our case unusual.”
