From November, patients will be able to access test results and other information via the NHS app, freeing up their phone lines for GP surgeries.
NHS England will allow automatic access to GP records on 1 November after a one-year delay due to “security” issues.
For patients with access to more sensitive information, such as cancer test results, GPs can change how and when their records are shared.

NHS Scotland had a Covid government application but was reprimanded by the Scottish government and NHS National Services Scotland failed to inform people of how their personal information was used by NHS Scotland
Professor Sir Stephen Powis, NHS England, said: “Improving patient access to health information in the NHS app will put patients in the driver’s seat when it comes to managing their health.”
He added that for emergency calls, the GP will help free up phone lines.
The November date was confirmed in a letter sent to doctors last week. He said the apps “could consider increasing the number of patients with online access and/or gradually increasing their level of access over the next few months.”
