Heat milk and sugar in a saucepan and mix until the latter dissolves. Take it from the stove and pour it into a wide and deep bowl in which we will put the chopped hard bread. Let it moisten for five minutes.

Meanwhile, flour the bottom and sides of a 21 x 10 cm (7 cm high) rectangular mold. Liquid sugar. We also turn on the oven and warm it up to 185 ºC.

Beat the eggs and add to the bread, milk and sugar mixture, along with the vanilla extract if available. If we wish, we can flavor the pudding with lemon or orange zest, a pinch of anise or another liqueur.

Crush with a lever mixer and pour the result into the caramelized mold. Cover with aluminum foil and place on a baking tray. To make a bain-marie, we cover its base with hot water. Bake in the oven for about an hour and 20 minutes.

Remove the mold from the oven and allow it to cool completely before removing it from the mold so that it comes out intact and unbreakable. If we are not going to consume it now, we store it in the refrigerator until the time comes.
