A gastroenterologist has warned people about the risks of using a phone in the toilet and offered advice on how to stop the habit.
Dr Joseph Salhab has confirmed that sitting for long periods of time and pressing on the toilet – perhaps encouraged by taking your phone into the bathroom – can lead to an increased risk of developing hemorrhoids, also known as haemorrhoids.
He also commented on how this can lead to unwanted bacteria on your device.
Dr Salhab, who calls himself a “dermatologist” on TikTok, said: “Exercising and sitting for long periods while trying to go to the toilet puts you at risk of developing hemorrhoids, which can be painful and bleed.”
He then gave tips on how to shorten the time for a runner-up, including limiting cell phone use.

“Definitely try to limit your phone use when you use the bathroom, and you can use a step stool,” he added, “because if you elevate your feet, the stool will be easier to pass through — which is very beneficial. “
Another piece of advice he gave was to change your diet and eat more fruit when going to the bathroom takes so long you might as well scroll through social media.
“Increase your fiber intake with fruit, which can stimulate bowel movements,” he advised.
“This includes things like kiwis, dragon fruit, apples, pears, plums and the vitamin C helps too.”
Dr Salhab also added the possibility of using nutritional supplements such as psyllium husk, which can be added to drinks.
Speaking of which, he reminded people to “make sure you’re drinking enough water because that’s how you run out of water and fiber.” [he said with fingers entwined].’
Magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate were chosen as further dietary supplements.
And Dr. Salhab again addressed phone use in the bathroom in the comments under his original TikTok.
In response to someone who said there was “nothing you can do these days,” he wrote: “This should be the right time to poop!” Cleaner. Easier. Imagine the bacteria on your phone.”
