A man who was told he had less than 12 months to live is now cancer-free thanks to a British study of a new drug.
Robert Glynn, 51, said he “wouldn’t be here” if it wasn’t for the amazing results of the Christie NHS Foundation Trust trial in Manchester.
Mr Glynn, a welder from Worsley, Greater Manchester, was diagnosed with fatal bile duct cancer in his liver in August 2020. He was told that it had spread to the adrenal gland. He received an immunotherapy drug already approved for other types of cancer in combination with standard chemotherapy. The drug cannot be named due to the experimental nature of the study.
Mr Glynn’s tumors shrunk and in April he underwent surgery to remove them. Since his surgery, his quarterly scans show that he is cancer free.

In comments made exclusively to the PA news agency, Mr Glynn said: “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the hearing.
“When the opportunity was presented to me to participate in the research, I jumped at it with both hands.
“You do everything to prolong your life.
“I feel very lucky because I had the cancer for two years and had no idea.
“So it was overwhelming to release everything.
“In a strange way, the diagnosis changed my life.
“We go out into nature with my partner Simone and go for a lot of walks. When something like this happens, you realize life is for living.”
Mr. Glynn has not required any treatment since his surgery and his quarterly scans show that he is cancer free.
More trials are being conducted in more patients in hopes of changing the way bile duct cancer is treated.
In a bid to live a healthier life, Mr Glynn also completely changed his diet and lost several stone after tipping the scales at 16st.
“I have eliminated all processed foods, refined sugars, dairy and milk and now eat a smoothie every day and lots of organic fruit and vegetables and make everything from scratch,” he said.
“I managed to lose 5th place which was a big step for me.
“I realized you can’t just rely on the doctors to help you. You have to help yourself there too. It is also important to stay positive and not give up.
“It ain’t over till it’s over.”
Customers who repeatedly visit the pharmacy for cough medicine will be referred for cancer screening by the pharmacist without first seeing a GP in a pilot scheme in Cornwall from next month.
