Tens of thousands of residents in Reno, Nevada were forced to evacuate their homes over the weekend as the human-caused Hawk Fire rapidly approached the city.
About 42,000 people have been displaced or are actively evacuating, while another 45,000 residents received official advisories to prepare for immediate departure as flames threatened northern Reno.
Local television broadcasts showed flames advancing toward city roadways, and videos filmed by residents and verified by news agency Reuters showed thick columns of smoke rising close to residential neighborhoods.
Reno, located in Washoe County near the California border, is the third most populous city in Nevada. The city sits in the Truckee Meadows valley at the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Scope of the Fire and Evacuation Zones
Fire monitoring platforms indicated that evacuation zones stretch from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the University of Nevada campus in the northwestern section of the city.
Despite the proximity of the flames to residential areas, Reno-Tahoe International Airport remained outside the designated hazard zone, and commercial flights continued to operate normally on Sunday.
Officials confirmed during a news conference that the Hawk Fire has burned 52,610 stremmata, equivalent to more than 10,500 acres. Authorities confirmed that the wildfire was caused by human activity, and a formal investigation into its origin remains underway.
At least 20 structures have been confirmed damaged or destroyed by the blaze, which threatens hundreds of additional homes across Washoe County.
The University of Nevada, Reno is the flagship land-grant research institution of Nevada, housing thousands of students and faculty in northwestern Reno. Reno-Tahoe International Airport serves as the principal commercial air transportation hub for northwestern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe resort region.
Casualties and Extreme Weather Conditions
Shane Akerson, the coordinator for firefighting and emergency relief operations, confirmed that six people have suffered injuries in the blaze, including three civilians and three emergency response workers.
Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief Richard Edwards stated that fire crews were first dispatched to the blaze at 11:15 a.m. local time on Saturday. Edwards noted that firefighters have been battling the flames under extreme red flag conditions.
A red flag warning is an official alert issued by weather forecasting services when environmental conditions present an imminent danger of severe wildfire activity. The designation signifies a hazardous combination of high ambient temperatures, extremely low relative humidity levels, and strong gusty winds that can rapidly spread flames.
Edwards warned that these dangerous weather conditions were expected to persist throughout Sunday, complicating efforts by ground crews to establish containment lines around the perimeter of the fire.
Emergency Declarations and Guard Deployment
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo issued a formal declaration of a state of emergency for Washoe County on Saturday evening as the wildfire expanded. Washoe County covers the entire Reno metropolitan area and extends south to encompass portions of Lake Tahoe.
Lombardo described the Hawk Fire as an active and rapidly evolving situation. The governor urged all residents living within impacted areas to remain on high alert and strictly follow instructions issued by local emergency authorities.
To assist local emergency crews, Lombardo ordered the military deployment of two Nevada National Guard helicopters to aid aerial water-dropping operations. The governor also activated 60 National Guard personnel to provide operational support to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office on the ground.

National Guard units provide specialized equipment, troop transport, search and rescue capability, and aviation assets during major natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, and severe weather emergencies.
