A Hainan Airlines passenger aircraft carrying more than 200 people from Beijing to Manchester made an emergency landing in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, on Saturday morning. The Airbus A330-300 touched down safely at 06:30 local time (02:30 Moscow time) after experiencing a technical issue during flight.
No passengers or crew members were injured during the incident, according to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations for Krasnoyarsk Krai. Emergency officials confirmed that the landing caused no damage to the aircraft or to ground infrastructure at the airport.
The press service for the regional emergency ministry stated that it received an initial notification regarding the emergency landing of the Hainan Airlines flight as it travelled along its international route. While emergency services initially reported more than 200 people on board, the West Siberian Transport Prosecutor's Office later specified that more than 230 passengers and crew members were on the aircraft.
Hainan Airlines, established in 1993, is one of the largest commercial air carriers in China, operating scheduled domestic and international flights connecting major global hubs. The long-haul route between Beijing Capital International Airport and Manchester Airport connects northern England with the Chinese capital. Krasnoyarsk, located in eastern Siberia along the Yenisey River, serves as a major regional transit point with an international airport equipped to handle long-range wide-body aircraft.
Flight path and technical issue
According to the Shot Telegram channel, the aircraft remained in the air for approximately two hours before landing. The channel reported that an abnormal situation occurred on board while the plane was in flight, prompting the crew to make several circles over Divnogorsk, a town located near Krasnoyarsk along the Yenisey River. Video footage showing the flight path indicated that the flight crew then made the decision to land at Krasnoyarsk airport.
The landing was carried out in a routine manner, although airport emergency services were deployed to meet the aircraft on the runway upon its arrival. According to information reported by Shot, a replacement aircraft will be sent to Krasnoyarsk to collect the stranded passengers and complete the journey to Manchester.
Following the forced landing, the West Siberian Transport Prosecutor's Office announced that preliminary findings indicate the incident was caused by technical reasons. The supervisory agency did not provide further details regarding the specific nature of the malfunction. However, prosecutors confirmed that oversight measures have been launched to protect passenger rights and ensure travelers receive all mandatory services required during flight delays, including food, refreshments, and accommodation.
