Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed she felt extra pressure and shame after her high-profile 1997 breakup with fellow Hollywood actor Brad Pitt. The 53-year-old Oscar-winning actress reflected on the intense public scrutiny surrounding their 1990s romance during an appearance on the podcast Friends Keep Secrets on Tuesday, September 9.
Speaking on the podcast about her career and the public attention on her personal life, Paltrow recalled feeling deeply upset when the relationship came to an end. She explained that intense media attention magnified the situation beyond reality, causing her to carry additional weight and shame because the bond ultimately failed to last.
Despite the difficult breakup, Paltrow confirmed that she and Pitt remain good friends today. She described the actor as a wonderful person and expressed her ongoing affection for him.
Media Scrutiny and Split
The pair first met in 1994 on the set of the psychological thriller film Se7en after Paltrow was cast in the project. At the time the relationship began, Paltrow was around 22 years old while Pitt was 31. Paltrow described their initial meeting as love at first sight, recalling that their early time together was wonderful and very fun.
They formally became engaged in 1996 before deciding to end their relationship in June 1997. Paltrow characterized the experience of their growing fame as overwhelming, noting that as her own acting career expanded, she became widely recognized by the public as Pitt's partner.
Filming Se7en and Romance
When asked during the interview if her relationship with Pitt felt more like a fantasy than reality, Paltrow acknowledged that a side of their romance was extremely intense. She noted that she was very young at the time, while Pitt was already established as a handsome movie star. She added that their demanding work schedules frequently took them to different parts of the world.
