High tide covered stretches of streets across at least six sectors of Guayaquil on Tuesday night, according to municipal surveillance reports.
Water began flooding roads located close to rivers and estuaries during the evening of Tuesday, September 29. Security officials monitoring C5GYE surveillance cameras confirmed that water had accumulated in multiple locations across the city past 10:00 p.m., matching the predicted peak tidal period.
Flooded Streets and Monitoring Points
Surveillance cameras recorded water covering the roadway at the intersection of Malecón Simón Bolívar and Juan Montalvo, situated adjacent to the Guayas River. Central areas also saw water gathering at the junction of Santa Elena and 10 de Agosto streets.
Further south, road accumulations were reported at El Oro and 46th Street. In the Cisne 2 neighborhood, water covered the intersection of 14th Street and Juan Luces Cortez. Additional street flooding was observed at Federico Goding and Camilo Destruge, as well as 18th Street and Cristóbal Colón.
All identified points formed part of the evening monitoring report maintained by Segura EP, the municipal public enterprise responsible for security and emergency management in Guayaquil. As Ecuador's largest port city, Guayaquil sits along the Guayas River and is intersected by a complex network of salt-water estuaries, leaving low-lying coastal neighborhoods susceptible to periodic tidal inundation.
Naval Tide Forecasts and Safety Advice
Tide projections published by the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy, known by its Spanish acronym Inocar, forecasted a high tide level of 4.39 metres at 9:11 p.m. for Guayaquil and its broader area of influence. Inocar's schedule recorded a preceding low tide earlier in the day at 4:05 p.m., when water levels dropped to 0.65 metres.
The high tide accumulation occurred hours after afternoon rainfall impacted various sectors across Guayaquil. Following the rising water levels, Segura EP urged residents and drivers to exercise caution when traveling through sectors adjacent to local rivers and estuaries during high tide hours.
