A 54-year-old woman in Athens has given birth to a healthy baby girl from an embryo frozen more than 22 years ago, achieving a landmark medical milestone in assisted reproduction.

The mother, Christina Rapti-Tzelepi, delivered the 3,490-gram infant after undergoing an embryo transfer on December 23, 2025, at a private clinic in the capital. The birth occurred 22 years, five months, and 23 days after her genetic material was first placed into cold storage on March 17, 2004.

According to the medical team, the interval represents the longest internationally published period of cryopreservation for autologous genetic material that has successfully resulted in a live birth. Autologous material refers to eggs or embryos created using a patient's own genetic material rather than donor cells.

The scientific team has gathered all clinical and laboratory data from the case and is preparing to submit the findings for publication in international peer-reviewed medical literature. Previous world records for successful births from autologous frozen embryos involved storage periods of 18 years and three months in Japan, and 17 years in Israel.

Cryopreservation is a specialized medical technique used in fertility care to preserve biological cells by cooling them to extremely low temperatures. The process halts metabolic activity and allows embryos to remain viable for decades until they are thawed for transfer to the uterus.

Tragedy behind the medical achievement

The birth carries profound personal meaning for the family following a sudden tragedy. In 2004, Rapti-Tzelepi had successfully given birth to a baby boy on her initial attempt following her first round of fertility treatment.

However, in October 2025, the family suffered a tragic loss when their 21-year-old son died in a road accident. In the aftermath of their grief, Rapti-Tzelepi decided to proceed with using the remaining embryos that had stayed in storage since her original treatment over two decades earlier.

The procedure had to be carried out within a strict legal window. Under Greek regulations governing assisted reproduction, women must fulfill all clinical procedures and obtain authorization before reaching the statutory age limit of 54 years.

Hope renewed after profound loss

Konstantinos Pantos, gynecologist to Rapti-Tzelepi and secretary general of the Greek Society of Reproductive Medicine, characterized the birth as a major scientific and clinical development. Speaking to the Athens News Agency, Pantos emphasized that medical practice must balance regulatory safety with human compassion.

The parents shared that while their new daughter could never replace the son they lost, her birth brought light and renewed hope back into their home during a period of deep sorrow.
