Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has stated that Northern Ireland will inevitably unite with the Republic of Ireland in the long term.
Speaking in an extensive interview with The Guardian newspaper, Brown explained that any future unification would necessarily be a long process dependent on mutual agreement among the population.
His comments carry significant weight due to his firm opposition to Scottish independence and his pivotal role in Northern Ireland peace efforts during his years in government. Brown served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2007 to 2010, having previously served a decade as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Tony Blair.
Brown was Chancellor when the historic Good Friday Agreement was signed in 1998, ending decades of sectarian conflict known as the Troubles. Later as Prime Minister in 2010, he promoted the devolution of justice and policing powers to Northern Ireland's coalition government at Stormont, marking a crucial step toward political reconciliation.
Scottish independence and regional differences
In his interview, Brown argued that Northern Ireland occupies a position that is potentially different from the rest of the United Kingdom when compared to Scotland. Addressing persistent pressure for Scottish independence, he stated that Scotland must find ways to coexist in cooperation with other nations rather than pursuing separation.
Brown stressed that independence would not be the right path forward for Scotland. He emphasized that Scotland is geographically, economically, socially, and culturally linked with the rest of the United Kingdom, including England, Wales, and parts of Ireland.
Geographic links and future agreement
When asked whether Northern Ireland's geographic connection with the Republic of Ireland makes political union logical, Brown agreed that Ireland will unite in the long term. He underscored that any merger must be a gradual process requiring people to come together and resolve their differences.
Brown concluded that the central question facing the region is whether the population can ultimately reach a consensus on a unified future. Northern Ireland remains one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom alongside England, Scotland, and Wales.
