The National Court of Justice has ratified a sentence of 34 years and 8 months against Germán Cáceres for the femicide of Quito lawyer María Belén Bernal.

Germán Cáceres 34-year sentence upheld by high court

Germán Cáceres had his sentence of 34 years and 8 months in prison for the femicide of Quito lawyer María Belén Bernal ratified on Friday, Aug. 7. The Criminal Chamber of the National Court of Justice unanimously declared the cassation appeal filed by his defense to be inadmissible after analyzing arguments presented by the State Attorney General's Office.

Disappearance in Quito

Judicial authorities identified Cáceres as the author of the femicide against Bernal. The Quito lawyer disappeared on Sept. 11, 2022, inside the Alberto Enríquez Gallo Superior Police School, located in northern Quito. Ten days later, her body was found on Casitagua Hill near the police training school.

Magistrates also ratified the state of innocence for Sub-lieutenant Alfonso C.
