Animated comedy Futurama has ended its 14th season without a 15th season order, but series creator Matt Groening confirmed more stories are coming.
Speaking to Variety, Groening revealed that the writers, animators, and voice cast all want to continue producing the long-running show.
Addressing the series history of multiple cancellations and revivals, Groening said that while executives could put the show in a coffin and nail the lid shut, they could not bury it and that it would rise again.
Groening, best known as the creator of The Simpsons, launched Futurama as an animated science fiction sitcom following Philip J. Fry, a 20th-century pizza delivery worker who is cryogenically frozen and reawakened a thousand years later. Set in 31st-century New New York, the show centers on Fry, spaceship captain Turanga Leela, and their colleagues at the Planet Express delivery company.
Broadcast History and Revivals
The series has experienced a turbulent network history since its debut. Futurama originally premiered on the Fox network in 1999 before being cancelled in 2003. It later returned through four direct-to-television films that were subsequently re-edited into episodes for Comedy Central.
The Comedy Central era concluded in 2013 with the episode Meanwhile, an installment conceived as a finale in which Fry and Leela lived a lifetime together while time across the rest of the universe stood frozen.
Streaming platform Hulu, majority-owned by Disney, resurrected the animated series in 2023, bringing the show back for two additional seasons after a decade off the air.
Upcoming Specials and Future Stories
The 14th season recently concluded with an episode titled Final Definitivo: La Ultima Conclusion. Although no 15th season has been confirmed yet, the story will continue through three extended-length special episodes currently in production for Hulu and international platform Disney+.
The first of the upcoming special broadcasts is scheduled to air in 2027 and will be set during Christmas.
Groening explained that these new installments will bring back elements from the show's earliest years while addressing storyline questions that have remained unanswered for decades.
With production underway on the three extended specials, the animated comedy continues its long tradition of surviving cancellation and returning with new adventures for its core cast.
