Food manufacturer Fontanini Foods LLC has recalled more than 2,300 pounds of frozen pork breakfast sausages after discovering they may contain clear, hard plastic.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall after the Illinois-based company received complaints from two customers who discovered plastic fragments in the meat.
The recall affects 2,320 pounds of frozen pork breakfast links produced on June 23, 2026. The products were shipped to commercial food distributors across California, Florida, Michigan, and Nevada before being delivered to restaurants and other dining establishments.
The affected sausages are packaged in 10lb cardboard box cases labeled Fontanini PORK SAUSAGE LINKS. Each box displays ITEM 393 printed on the casing and PACKED ON 06/23/2026 on the shipping label.
Pork Sausage Recall Details
Health officials warned that ingesting hard plastic shards can cause physical injury to consumers. The sharp fragments can create cuts in the mouth or damage teeth during chewing.
Foreign material in meat products also creates a choking risk if fragments lodge in the throat. Doctors warn that in rare cases, sharp plastic can enter the digestive tract and pierce the intestinal lining.
A perforated bowel can trigger sepsis, a dangerous body reaction to severe infection. No illnesses or injuries related to the sausages have been reported to date.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service operates as the agency of the United States Department of Agriculture responsible for inspecting commercial meat, poultry, and egg products. The agency published the safety alert provided by the sausage manufacturer.
Contamination Hazards and Advice for Food Outlets
Health officials have instructed restaurants and food service operators not to serve the recalled sausages. Outlets holding the products should throw them away immediately or contact the distributor for a full refund.
Although inspectors have not confirmed how the plastic entered the sausage batch, foreign material contamination often occurs during industrial processing. Broken machinery parts on production lines can introduce plastic pieces into food products before packaging.
Medical experts note that bowel perforations require immediate emergency care to prevent severe infection. Sepsis occurs when the body immune response causes widespread inflammation throughout organ systems.
Recent Food Industry Plastic Contaminations
Similar manufacturing issues led to a separate food recall in March, when the Food and Drug Administration alerted consumers to plastic fragments on a commercial production line.
Convenience store chain Wawa recalled nearly 22,000 units of four dairy products in March after detecting plastic shards during production. The United States Food and Drug Administration oversees safety regulations for dairy products, beverages, and processed foods.
The Wawa recall involved 16oz pint plastic containers of Wawa-branded reduced fat milk 2 percent, Double Dutch Chocolate Milk, Cookies and Cream Milk, and low-fat chocolate milk sold in refrigerated display cases.
Those dairy items were distributed to store shelves in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania before being pulled from sale.
Federal regulators classified the Wawa event as a Class II recall. A Class II designation applies when exposure to a product may cause temporary health issues, while the probability of serious health consequences remains remote.
The sausage alert follows other major food recalls, including an incident where more than 36 million pounds of rice and ramen sold at grocery chain Trader Joe's were recalled over safety concerns.
