Florence Pugh has revealed that Tom Holland is the reason she secured a cameo appearance as Yelena Belova in the film Spider-Man: New Day. Speaking on the Jimmy Fallon show, Pugh explained that her involvement was down to the decision and desire of the leading man.
According to Pugh, the film's creators approached Holland a year ago to discuss which hero he would like to see make a cameo appearance. They initially offered him Thor or another mighty character who would be able to help solve a problem regarding an unknown threat in the city.
Instead of opting for a powerful god, Holland told the creators that they should invite Pugh to the picture to play the character of Yelena Belova. The studio followed his recommendation, and she was cast in the film.
Fans support the crossover
Pugh expressed her gratitude to both Holland and the fans for the opportunity to star in the project. Audiences were delighted by the news and have strongly supported her cameo in the film.
Holland has portrayed Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for several years, headlining a highly successful standalone trilogy. The franchise frequently features appearances from other established Marvel heroes, mirroring the interconnected nature of the comic books.
Pugh made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Yelena Belova in the 2021 film Black Widow, starring alongside Scarlett Johansson. Her character, a highly trained operative from the same Red Room programme as Natasha Romanoff, quickly became a fan favourite. She subsequently appeared in the television series Hawkeye, establishing her presence within the wider narrative of the cinematic universe.
Interconnected storytelling
The original alternative suggested by the creators, Thor, is a foundational Marvel character based on Norse mythology. Played on screen by Chris Hemsworth, the character is known for his immense power, which would have provided a very different dynamic for the unidentified urban threat mentioned by the film's producers. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is a late night American talk show broadcast on NBC.
