Fishermen evacuated dozens of frightened tourists trapped by a wildfire on the Greek island of Crete, with the rescue caught on video and shared by The Sun.
Around 30 people were cut off between the sea and the fire on a beach at Agios Pavlos on the island’s southern coast. Video footage captured two moments from the rescue. In the first, a boat pulled close to the shore while people waited their turn to board a motorboat.
In the second clip, the sky had turned black with smoke, reducing visibility at sea, but the fishermen’s boat pressed on toward the beach.
Fisherman Nikos Matthaïakis said the port authority had asked him and his colleagues to join the evacuation effort. He said he had been asked for help and gave it willingly, traveling to the scene on his fishing boat.
