Brazilian television presenter Fátima Bernardes has spoken openly about the emotional transition of watching her children leave home, describing their independence as a mission accomplished.
The 64-year-old journalist discussed the bittersweet shift during the fifth episode of the interview programme Na Palma da Mari: Entre Mulheres, hosted by Mari Palma. Bernardes appeared on the broadcast alongside her daughter Bia Bonemer to examine how family dynamics evolve once adult children begin running their own households.
Bernardes described the conflicting feelings that arrive when returning to a quiet house after decades of family life. She explained that on certain days a mother walks through the door wishing the rooms were full of activity, while on other days she feels relieved that nobody is there and that she does not have to say a single word, noting that both reactions coexist naturally in daily life.
Satisfaction of raising independent adults
Reflecting on what defines parental success, Bernardes said her greatest satisfaction came from knowing she had raised three individuals who are fully capable of standing alone in the world, holding down jobs, and pursuing their own ambitions. She explained that reaching that point brought a deep sense of relief and confirmed that her primary maternal mission was finished, adding that everything that follows is pure pleasure.
Bernardes is one of the most prominent figures in Brazilian broadcasting, having spent nearly fourteen years co-anchoring TV Globo's flagship evening news bulletin Jornal Nacional before fronting her own long-running morning talk show, Encontro com Fátima Bernardes. She shares adult triplets with fellow television journalist William Bonner, making her home life a topic of enduring public interest across Brazil.
Reconnecting with personal desires
During the discussion, Bernardes also urged mothers navigating an empty home to rediscover their own interests. She recommended that women begin reflecting on their personal well-being and pursue activities they genuinely enjoy, acknowledging that her own continuous professional career provided a crucial pillar of stability throughout her children's upbringing.
Host Mari Palma raised the familiar cultural idea that some mothers feel hurt or slighted when a child states that they no longer require parental support, asking whether viewing that separation as an accomplishment can prove difficult.
Bernardes dismissed that concern, insisting that seeing children become self-reliant is a reason for immense pride. She stressed the importance of young adults developing the emotional resilience needed to live independently, noting that one of her daughters actively enjoys staying home alone even when her boyfriend is away, which Bernardes highlighted as an encouraging and healthy trait.
