The romance genre is generally accused of being stories for teenagers, and the credit is taken away from them. But, besides being a fairly general statement, it’s also that it doesn’t take into account that there are romantic movies that aren’t your typical teen storieswhere relationships don’t always work out, love is deepened, and emotions are explored that aren’t discussed every day.
Almost as if it were a review of all of those romantic movies for teenagers, Adam Sandler stars in 2002’s ‘Punch-Drunk Love’, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The story follows a small business owner who struggles to make new relationships. One day he meets the love of his life, but a gang of crooks gets in the way. Available on HBO Max.
A star was born
Other love story that is not your typical teen movie It’s “A Star is Born,” which isn’t a musical as many suspect. It is a film directed by and starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, who bring to life Jackson and Ally, two musicians who fall in love, who begin a torrid romance, while trying to maintain their artistic careers. Available on HBO Max.
The lobster
In a unique episode, and which can hardly be classified in a single genre, we have “The Lobster”, by Yorgos Lanthimos. Colin Farrell, Rachel Weizs and Léa Seydoux star in this story of a world where singles are forced to find a romantic partner in less than 45 days or else they are turned into animals.

Her
Also set in a sci-fi tone is “Her,” a romantic drama from Spike Jonze, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlet Johansson. The story is about a man who writes letters for other people, and who falls in love with a sophisticated computer operating system that has a woman’s voice, and which helps him in his loneliness. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
In the mood for love
Also regarded as one of the best films ever, Wong-Kar Wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love’ is an exploration of romance like few others. Released in 2000, the story is set in 1962 Hong Kong, about a man and woman living in the same building, who discover that her husband and wife were having an affair. Available on Mubi.
Portrait of a woman on fire
And finally, one of the best romantic movies of 2019, ‘Portrait of a Woman on Fire’, by Cpeline Sciamma. The story is played by Adele Haenel and Noemie Merlant, who give life to Héloise and Marienne, a painter and her muse for whom she has to make a wedding portrait, but which triggers a feeling of her in her. Available on YouTube and Apple TV.
