Sigourney Weaver returns in “Avatar: The Sense of Water,” which finally hits theaters Dec. 16, 13 years after the first “Avatar” took over theaters and became the highest-grossing film in history. But how is that possible, if her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died at the end of the film? Very simple (well, it’s a figure of speech), returns playing a new character through the art and magic of motion capture: Kiri, a Na’vi teenager closely related to Grace..

‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’: James Cameron details the return of Sigourney Weaver as Kiri

Ever since Weaver’s return to the franchise was announced, questions about his character have been piling up. Who exactly is Kiri? What is your relationship with Dr. Augustine? Gradually, these doubts were clarified, and a week after the premiere, James Cameron, the director of the film, explained in detail the circumstances surrounding Weaver’s return and the origin of Kiri, who is actually Grace’s daughter, a human-Na’vi hybrid born after the doctor’s death.

“It was a great pleasure to work with Mr [Sigourney]”said Cameron during the press conference of ‘The meaning of water’, held on Tuesday, December 6 in London. “It had to be, because her character died in the first film and you can’t do anything else. How do we bring her back to life? Grace’s avatar was still alive, but she didn’t have a mind of her own, because Grace’s consciousness had to be ushered into it, so that it could move and talk and everything. It turns out that she was pregnant, she had a baby inside and that becomes the problem for Jake and Neytiri, who adopt her as their daughter.. Jake and Grace have a mother-son relationship in the first film, he becomes her protégé, so it’s fitting now that he protects her daughter and raises her as her own.”.

On the other hand, the director said that Kiri hides more than it seems at first sight, a power that amplifies the eternal search for identity typical of adolescence: “There’s something mysterious and enigmatic about her. Sig found a beautiful balance playing her as a classic teenager and someone who begins to describe her power and strength. She’s not a warrior, she doesn’t react like Neytiri would in certain situations. And she’s not even an alpha, until we see her manifest her powers of hers.”. When ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ hits theaters on December 16, we’ll find out exactly what makes Kiri so special.

The idea was born more than 10 years ago

Anyone who knows James Cameron will know that the ‘Titanic’ director likes to plan things ahead. So it should come as no surprise that he was already thinking about the character of Kiri right after the premiere of “Avatar.” This is confirmed by Weaver, who reveals it they started talking about her in 2010, keeping it a secret all this time.

“In 2010 we had that idea, a girl who feels more comfortable in the forest, with the creatures and flora and fauna”says Weaver. “But all the credit goes to Jim, who wanted to create a complex character. He has great things, but he is also lacking. I loved having the opportunity to play someone who I consider to be a real teenager in many ways.. And on the other hand, she has virtues that he is learning. I felt very privileged, happy, excited and terrified.”.

“Luckily there was plenty of time to prepare”continues the actress of ‘Alien, the eighth passenger’, who completely immersed herself in the teenage experience to give life to Kiri. “I was in high school and did other things to hear the tone of voices. There’s a huge range of what a teenager between 12 and 15 is, and once I figured that out, I was able to say, “Okay, now I can get Kiri out,” who’s combined with who. i was at 14. i loved leaving my skin behind to get so -sometimes- runny”.
