The hype for James Wanit’s the next horror movie M3GAN is growing. The wild footage that has been released just has this weird madness that connects with people and makes them excited about the movie. Now, Wan and the filmmaker, Akela Cooperthey’re saying things that will get the hype train going.
The story centers around a lifelike AI robot doll who ends up turning against her creator and going on a killing spree. During a recent interview with Empire, Wan said the film is “Annabella meet The Terminator”, which seems like a perfect description.
Wan goes on to say that while M3GAN is designed to bring sweet companionship to lonely children, like orphaned Cady in the film, “This one soon goes off the rails. I’m fascinated by things that are supposed to be innocent, but become more… evil.
As for Cooper, when she wrote this film, she was inspired by her greatest childhood fear. She explains: “My thing was ventriloquist dummies. I saw the Anthony Hopkins movie Magic at an early age and that cemented the restlessness in my brain. I was great Child’s play also fan. It has always been my dream to create my own iconic monster.”
Well, it looks like he’s done it and I have a feeling the movie will be a big box office hit. Universal is already thinking about making a sequel. One element of the trailer that everyone is talking about is that bizarre dance sequence. Cooper explains that there’s even more to that scene to discover and tease, “I can’t wait for people to hear the chosen song” that accompanies the on-screen dance.
The film is directed by Gerard Johnstonewho directed the Australian horror film Homeboundand the script comes from Akela Cooper (Malignant, The nun 2). Here is the synopsis:
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams of Get Out), M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, to the child she cares about.
When Gemma suddenly becomes the guardian of her 8-year-old orphaned niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma is insecure and unprepared to become a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to solve both problems, a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
Allison Williams (Come out, perfection) both starring and executive producing the film. The film also stars Ronny Chieng (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace), Jen Van Epps (Cowboy bebop), Lori Dungey (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, extended edition), And Stephane Garneau-Monten (Simple).
The film will be released in theaters on January 13, 2023.
