Guinness World Records has shared an amazing and fascinating video that explores the ghostly story behind the fabled La Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls), found in the canals of Xochimilco just south of downtown Mexico City.
This place has always scared me and I’ve always wanted to visit! I loved this kind of stuff! The small island was covered in thousands of dolls by a hermit named Don Julián Santana Barrera. He felt he had to pay his respects to a girl who had drowned in the area and claimed he heard her asking for her doll.
Former island owner Julián Santana Barrera placed these dolls around the island for a very particular reason, and visitors to this day are said to make an offering before venturing onto its shores.
Barrera died on the island having drowned in the same spot as the little girl. Although no one lives on the island, the dolls remain and are considered haunted. They also set a world record:
This is the world’s largest collection of haunted dolls, there are thousands of creepy mutilated and decapitated dolls covered in cobwebs and bugs and they are located on the Mexican Isle of Dolls or La Isla de las Muñicas. Some Guinness World Records titles have such compelling backstories that we have to share them.
