‘House of the Dragon’: One of the highlights of the last chapter was Matt Smith’s idea

It is not the first time that Matt Smith, who plays Daemon in “The Dragon’s House”, is in charge of planning, or improvising, the execution of a scene. And it is never just any scene, because one of those improvised by the actor was the one in which he lays the crown on his brother, King Viseyrs (Paddy Considine), after his triumphal entry worthy of the Emmy. Once again, Smith was once again commissioned to come up with one of the most significant shots of the last episode, called “The Black Queen”.

The season finale of “House of the Dragon” left us with the shocking death of one of Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) children, Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault). The war between greens and blacks had been palpable for several episodes, but the Black Queen wanted to stay calm, without going to war in a visceral way. However, after the attack on her son, Driftmark’s heir, the Targaryen loses her temper and this murder is the key to throwing herself into battle from Rhaenyra without hesitation.

The last episode ends with a scene in which we see Daemon bringing the news of Lucerys’ death to his wife, in a shot approaching the queen and capturing her as she turns her back to the camera and writhes. son. The queen shows her mourning only with the gestures of her body, which she shrinks from her pain, lowering her head, remembering the queen’s transformation into a dragon. The scene culminates with Rhaenyra turning to the camera to stare at the viewers with a look full of rage and rage, with tears in her eyes, with the word war written in her pupils.

This scene, without dialogue and accompanied only by the performance of our protagonists and the soundtrack of Ramin Djawadi, was suggested and conceived by Smith, as confirmed by Emma D’Arcy in an interview with The Face. The actress analyzed the expression on her character’s face in that shoot and revealed very interesting details about this staging, as well as clarifying whether the anger reflected on her face will serve as the “engine” for the second season: “I absolutely think so. The second season of ‘The house of the dragon’ will arrive in 2024, and not in 2023 as had been hypothesized in recent days. This was confirmed by the content director of HBO, Casey Bloys, during an interview with Vulture, in which he officially reiterated that the next season will not arrive before 2024, with no precise date confirmed. “Do not wait for it for 2023, I think it will arrive in 2024.
