The animated adaptation of the classic tale ‘Pinocchio’ by Guillermo del Toro was presented in a special screening at Morelia International Film Festival 2022, where the director of Jalisco could not be present, but left an exciting video message thanking the work of the festival and a short tour of all the work poured into the film.

In the video in which Del Toro presented his film, which will arrive on Netflix on December 9, he commented that he could not be present for personal reasons, underlining the value of the festival within Mexican cinema, thanking the president of the FICM Alejandro Ramirez Maganato its director Daniela Michele and in Cinépolis, for all the support they gave her.

Guillermo went on to talk about how this film took 14 to 15 years to make, practically half of his career. This is because they wanted to demonstrate that animation is an art, not a film genre, much less a medium aimed at children. If not a tool to tell deep, beautiful, painful stories in a much more adult way.

They wanted to do it by demonstrating that animation is art, it’s cinema and it’s not a genre made for children, “Del Toro said.

Pinocchio was largely produced by Mexican animators.

Guillermo del Toro, during the presentation of ‘Pinocchio’, reported that the film was produced in about 1000 days, within 65 work units, of which a large part was shot in the Chucho workshop in Guadalajara, with animators from Jalisco. In addition to this, he recalled how in Mexico there is a great stop-motion animation movement, in various parts of the country.

Within this, he added that he had been very close to this animation movement for several years within the Guadalajara area, noting that the animators of the film were among the invited audience, to which he invited viewers to do them a loud applause. . That said, del Toro went on to say that this is a film that tried to animate the characters in a different way.

The director stressed that it is not a film made with lightness or sympathy. The film has moments of humor, tears or action, but it is not done in a condescending way with the public. Likewise, he emphasized the film’s acting work, where he ensured that the animators were the real actors in the film.

It has humor, it has sadness, it has moments of tears, of action, but it is not made vertical with condescension towards the audience “, commented the director.

Del Toro closed his message by commenting that in addition to Mexican animators, there are also artists from Brazil, Eastern Europe and the United States. Finally, he greeted his audience, hoping to be present to accompany them in another edition of the FICM. ‘Pinocchio’ arrives on Netflix on December 9 and in selected theaters in November.
