Friends actor Matthew Perry is causing quite a stir right now until next week’s release of her memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing”. He’s been on talk shows to promote it, and there have been articles talking about the saltier tidbits, like his battle with addiction and his crush on co-star Jennifer Aniston.
But perhaps the most outrageous part of the whole affair was Perry’s negative and unexpected comments about the actor. Keanu Reeves.
Variety reports that in two places in the memoir, Perry wonders why Reeves is still alive when “talented” actors and “original thinkers” like River Phoenix and Chris Farley had a tragic death.
“The list of geniuses who were ahead of their time is too long to be detailed here – suffice it to say that at the top of any such list should be my co-star in ‘A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon’, River Phoenix, “Perry writes.
Perry later continues: “River was a beautiful man, inside and out – too good for this world, it turned out. It always seems like the really talented guys get off. Because original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us? River was a better actor than me; I was funnier. But I certainly stood up to our scenes, which is no small feat, if I look back decades away. “
Keanu Reeves is mentioned again when Perry writes about the death of comedian Chris Farley. “His illness had progressed faster than mine. (Also, I had a healthy fear of the word ‘heroin’, a fear we didn’t share), ”Perry writes. “I made a hole in the wall of Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room when I found out. Keanu Reeves walks among us. I had to promote “Almost Heroes” two weeks after his death; I found myself publicly discussing his death from drugs and alcohol. I was high the whole time. “
Okay … first of all, it’s absolutely devastating that these talented young actors died from their addictions. It is foolish and such a loss. But why on earth would you choose to contrast those deaths with the fact that someone totally stranger is still alive? Keanu Reeves has had so many tragedies in his own life, yet we have story after story on the internet about how he is the kindest person. He’s pretty much America’s Sweetheart, so I don’t know why Perry picked him to spot him as some sort of anomaly as to why he’s still standing. As if he has fewer reasons to live because he’s not a superior actor like the others mentioned? It’s a strange and dark path to take, Perry, and he’s not earning you points from fans.
