True crime fiction is gaining more and more followers within the audience of streaming platforms. Some in docuseries like ‘The girl in the picture’ or ‘The girl from the Vatican’, but also with fiction that recreates cases like ‘Dahmer’, ‘The Watcher’ or the latest film that Netflix has just released, The stranger (The stranger).
‘The Stranger’ is based on a real case from 2003 and was featured in Kate Kyriacou’s book, ‘The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe’s Killer’. This Netflix movie does not begin in a linear way by telling the facts, but for the first 30 minutes the bond between these two men, Henry Teague, Daniel’s killer, and Mark, the undercover cop, who in a sense they know, it is not clear, almost fortuitous. The intrigue is unleashed when the intentions of this police officer and the mission to get Henry to confess to his crime are revealed.
What other details do we know about “The Stranger”?
“Lo Straniero” is directed by Thomas M. Wrightand stars Joel Edgerton as Mark and Sean Harris as Henry Teague. The Stranger takes place in a suffocating atmosphere, around the mind of this killer who wants to change his life, but finds himself immersed in the darkness of his past.
The mechanics of an undercover investigation are fascinating (…) But what fascinated us most was the psychology of a relationship of two men who are trapped in a car and trapped in each other’s life, but who they constantly lie to each other, “Joel Edgerton said in an interview for the Sidney Morning Herald.
This undercover mission to catch the suspect was called Operation Mr Big carried out by the Queensland Police in Australia. The cast is completed by Ewen Leslie, Jada Alberts, Matthew Sunderland, Steve Mouzakis, Mike Foenander, Lucinda Nicholas and Fletcher Humphrys, among others. The actual names in this case have been changed, as have the events described.
Daniel Morcombe’s parents disagree with the portrayal of this film
Daniel Morcombe’s parents, Bruce and Denise Morcombe, teamed up with the Australian police to carry out an arduous investigation that would lead to the child’s whereabouts; several documents were handed over to you and in May 2005 a foundation was even started in the name of the boy named “Daniel Morcombe Foundation”.
However, despite the efforts of the production of The Stranger, Daniel’s parents publicly refused to participate in the project. The boy’s mother criticized the film last July, pointing out how morally corrupt and cruel. In response, the production explained that this is a fictional portrait and that they avoided including any details about the murder or the victim’s name.
