Early versions of “Black Adam” had a Rated R (+17) rating due to its violence

On Friday, October 21st, “Black Adam”, the new DC movie starring Dwayne Johnson, will be released on the big screen. The Rock plays an anti-hero whose goal is to dispense justice to the world in the way it deems right: to mercilessly and unceremoniously kill those he considers evil. This way of acting clashes with that of a conventional superhero, which is why in “Black Adam” the character has conflicts with both heroes and villains.

Early versions of “Black Adam” had a Rated R (+17) rating due to its violence

The film has a PG-13 age rating, but it was revealed that early releases, before they received the corresponding cuts and editing, were much more violent. Producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia confirmed to Collider that “Black Adam” originally received an R rating (meaning that anyone under 17 must be accompanied by an adult), which the creative team didn’t want, as the their goal was to achieve a PG-13 movie, but pushing the limits of violence as far as possible:

“We wanted to make sure we honor the Black Adam character. One of the things he’s known for is his aggression and violence, and making a Black Adam movie that didn’t have it wouldn’t be authentic. So we always got into this knowing we would take it this far. We knew it was going to be a collaborative process with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) to finally get where we could, to get that rating, but we were able to pull it off. It was very important for us to do this. And it’s something that Dwayne was also very committed to. “.

Flynn added that “Black Adam” had four rounds of cuts for the MPA to agree to lower the recommended age from 17 to 13, and who thinks they only got it about four weeks ago. They rushed a lot, but The Rock and the producers didn’t want to sacrifice the essence of the character.

Will we ever see the +17 version?

Flynn admitted that he edited the film a lot, that there were moments that they loved but had to eliminate them, especially related to action scenes and deaths more violent than those allowed. They originally had a dozen sequences of this style, but they had to reduce the number. Like this, One of the questions that audiences ask themselves the most after learning about the original rating of “Black Adam” is which scenes from the film have finally been eliminated and if we will see them one day.

We miss the +17 version of ‘Black Adam’ shortly, but maybe there is a chance to see him in the future. As Flynn explains for Collider, are considering including some deleted scenes in the movie menu for streaming and purchase.
