I have recently been looking for a new webcam for my desktop. I wanted one that was of good quality and had a good image. I don’t stream, but participate in an online graduate school program with a weekly Enlarge meeting for every class and game D&D and other games on a weekly basis with friends. I don’t care about 4K, but I’d rather have a higher frame per second. I spoke to Logitech and they were kind enough to send me a Logi Streamcam for review. For the past few weeks, I’ve really enjoyed having this camera.
Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect with the Streamcam. First, the MSRP is currently around $ 169.99 and is available at Logitech and many other outlets. It is available in white (the option that was sent to me) or in graphite which is a dark gray. The Streamcam has a built-in cable for connecting to your computer via USB-C and is designed to handle video up to 1080p at 60fps. It comes with a monitor stand, but also has a stand for use with a tripod. I found it very thoughtful as it opens up a bit of versatility without any additional purchase. You can use the Logitech acquisition software if you run a Mac or Windows 10 even though it seems like Windows 11 users don’t have the luxury. That said, Logitech G Hub is able to adjust camera settings on Windows 10, Windows 11 and Mac devices. G Hub the integration is especially useful if you have other Logitech products like me with a gaming keyboard and a gaming mouse.
Outside the gate, I was sad as the webcam doesn’t come with any kind of adapter for people still limited to their computers’ USB-A ports. Thankfully, I was able to find one on Amazon that can deliver 1080p with 60fps. You have to be careful when getting an adapter because other adapters I’ve tried weren’t fast enough and crashed at 720p / 30fps or 1080p / 30fps. I just wish an appropriate adapter had been included in the box.
Once I got the adapter, installation was a breeze. I plugged it in, used Logitech Capture to check the frame rate and resolution, and it was good to go within minutes. Of course, with the software, you can really dive into the settings and tweak a considerable amount. If you’re curious about the quality, I’ve made a short video that walks you through a range of resolutions, frame rates, lighting conditions, and even a built-in microphone test that can be compared to my dedicated microphone.
One area where the Streamcam seems to have difficulty is general video content. I’ve been using it lately to record a number of videos as an overhead camera and it seems to struggle to provide a clear and sharp image of the subjects of the videos if it’s not a person. Of course, you can tweak the settings and get better results, but the autofocus seems to only really work when human flesh is involved.
Overall, I think the Streamcam is great. It looks expensive at over $ 150. It’s really cool, but I think it should be closer to $ 100 personally. After watching the video, what do you think of the Streamcam? What’s your favorite webcam?
