“Jurassic World” director believes “Jurassic Park” shouldn’t have had sequels (but anticipates there will be more)

Last June, “Jurassic World: Dominion” hit theaters, third and final installment of the trilogy with Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt, and sixth film in the franchise started in the early 90s by Steven Spielberg with “Jurassic Park”. Colin Trevorrow has returned to the director’s chair to close a new stage in the saga, reuniting for the first time the protagonists of his trilogy with those of the original film. The result did well at the box office (it recently managed to exceed $ 1 billion worldwide), but by critics it is the worst of the last three.

“Jurassic World” director believes “Jurassic Park” shouldn’t have had sequels (but anticipates there will be more)

In a recent interview with Empire, the director admits that perhaps “Jurassic Park” shouldn’t have had more episodes because it is “inherently insurmountable”. In his words: “There probably should have been only one “Jurassic Park””.

However, he takes advantage of this reflection to state that the saga is by no means extinct and defends “Jurassic World: Dominion” and some of its more controversial narrative decisions, as an attempt to expand the universe of the franchise so that the next films do not. they fall into repetition: “In particular, I did something different than the other films to change the DNA of the franchise.. All five of the above films have plots about dinosaurs. This is a story of characters in a world where they coexist with dinosaurs. In order for the franchise to move forward, as it is inherently non-transferable, there probably should have been only one “Jurassic Park”, but if we do, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world where dinosaurs exist instead of “another reason why we go to an island”?”.

“Of course we would like to make more money”

The director assures that he did not think of “Dominion” as at the end of the saga, but that it was a slogan later put on by marketing to promote it: “I didn’t know this was the end of the franchise until I saw marketing. Those guys are brilliant at what they do, but I think it would have been clearer if I said ‘the end of an era’ instead of the end.” of everything. Because beyond the cynical approach – obviously we want to make more money, which is what “Jurassic World” is all about – a new dinosaur fan is born every day.. Kids deserve these movies and young directors grow up with these stories, like “Peter Pan”, “The Wizard of Oz” and other worlds we keep coming back to. “.

Where could the franchise go from here? He says he had meetings with the studio to discuss just that, but if he doesn’t come back for the next steps in “Jurassic” at least he thinks he’s left enough to play: “This film clearly has a real interest in creating new characters that a new generation will connect with: Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise) and Ramsay Cole (Mamoudou Athie), who I think in the extended version you really feel their purpose in a larger form. And the character of Dichen Lachman (Soyona Santos), who is eventually arrested. there is a lot to come”.

“Jurassic World: Dominion” will go on sale on DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K UHD, with an extended version with an additional 12 minutes, on October 13.
