If I were to take the Star Wars outside Andorthere would still be a fantastic, interesting and thrilling story to watch. Andor it’s a perfect example of intelligent storytelling, and it’s the kind of storytelling evolution I’ve been waiting for with the Star Wars franchising.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series creator, writer and producer Gilroy discussed his development of the series and explained that he developed it as if it wasn’t. Star Wars. The result is the first true “adult” Star Wars entered the history of franchising. Gilroy admits that having “respect” for the source material is limiting and doesn’t leave much room for innovation. So, he worked to go further and do something different. He explained:

“In every department, we’ve had all kinds of people come in, and they know it’s Star Wars, so they change their behavior. They change their attitude. They change their things. An actor will come out of a Ken Loach movie or something like that, put on Star Wars [costume], and suddenly, this great actor, who auditioned for you and didn’t know what it really was, starts acting differently. And you say, ‘Wait, no. Do what you know how to do. You are here because we want you to be real. ‘ So it’s a testament to the mighty power of Star Wars. He really gets into people’s heads, but to switch lanes and do it this way, it takes a little effort. It’s interesting.”

Before Gilroy got on board Andor, there were a couple of other different versions of the series, but the nostalgia for the franchise is what it says boxed into many of the previous creative teams. At one point the president of the studio Catherine Kennedy he asked for his thoughts, and that’s when Gilroy came up with a grand plan to push the boundaries of Star Wars storytelling. He went on to say:

“I wrote this great manifesto for you. ‘This is how your show should be. This is what you should never do. This is why it doesn’t work. ‘ So it was crazy, and it was wildly ambitious. And they were like, ‘Well, that’s really cool. Thanks for helping us know what’s wrong, but we could never do it. ‘ Then they tried a couple more things, and when it all cooled down, there was a moment where, my God, the stream was whoa. Now we can really do it ”.

It’s good to see Lucasfilm finally figured out what Gilroy wanted to do and had the confidence to move on. Andor it’s easily the best live-action Star Wars project ever since The Mandalorian.

The way Gilroy is developing Andor this is how Marvel should develop its shows and projects. They have to focus on telling a great story, a story so good that if you take all the Marvel elements out of it, you still have a great story deep down. Now I don’t want to see Tony Gilroy develop a Marvel series!
