The golden age of Mexican cinema still has some of the best titles in the domestic industry, however, there are some modern Mexican films that are also among the highlights and can easily be found on different streaming platforms.

Love dogs

As soon as the turn of the century was released, director Alejandro González Iñárritu launched ‘Love dogs’ in 2000, one of the best Mexican films in history. The story, played by Gael García, has three stories, apparently disconnected, but which have violence in common. Available on Netflix.

And your mother too

Undoubtedly, another of the great national directors was Alfonso Cuarón, who made his debut in 2001, ‘And your mother too’, a Mexican drama with Gael García and Diego Luna. The story follows two young men who embark on a journey where they meet Luisa, a Spanish girl tired of her life. Available on Apple TV.

Pan’s labyrinth

And completing the trilogy of the most acclaimed Mexican directors of all time is Guillermo del Toro with ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, a fantasy story set in post-war Spain. And where we meet Ofelia, an orphan girl who lives with her new mother’s partner, and who discovers a fantastic creature. In some regions available on Disney +, Prime Video and HBO Max.

Dream in another language

Directed by Ernesto Contreras and released in 2017, ‘Dream in another language’, one of the most acclaimed modern Mexican films. The story follows Martín, a linguist trying to preserve a dying language, and the only speakers are two friends who haven’t spoken to each other in years. Available on Amazon Prime Video.

Museum

One of those directors who also aims to become one of the great modern artists is Alonso Ruizpalacios, who has participated in major productions, but who in 2018 premiered ‘Museo’, a Mexican film inspired by the real robbery at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. Available on MUBI and YouTube.

I’m not here anymore

It is worth mentioning that in recent years there have been many Mexican films that could have had a place, but without a doubt one of the best and most acclaimed was Fernando Frías de la Parra’s “I’m Not Here Anymore”. The story follows Ulises, a 17-year-old boy who, forced by the situation in his neighborhood, must leave the country to start a new life in the United States. Available on Netflix.
